Review: Matched by Ally Condie

Synopsis:

Cassia has always trusted the Society to make the right choices for her: what to read, what to watch, what to believe. So when Xander's face appears on-screen at her Matching ceremony, Cassia knows with complete certainty that he is her ideal mate . . . until she sees Ky Markham's face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black.

The Society tells her it's a glitch, a rare malfunction, and that she should focus on the happy life she's destined to lead with Xander. But Cassia can't stop thinking about Ky, and as they slowly fall in love, Cassia begins to doubt the Society's infallibility and is faced with an impossible choice: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she's known and a path that no one else has dared to follow.

Review:
Matched is an amazing dystopian book. I liked it because it could be realistic. I feel like the Society in Matched could become a reality if we are not careful.

In Matched, the Society controls everything. What you wear, what and when you eat, where you work, where you live, who you will marry, when you will die, and everything else in between! It is pretty scary to think about never being able to decide anything for yourself.

The main character, Cassia, goes along with everything in the beginning, but she soon starts to question everything and take some risks. I think her Grandfather is to thank for this and the fact that a "glitch" showed Ky's face on the screen when it was supposed to be Xander's. I loved it when Cassia starts to question the Society's role in her life. When Cassia and Xander are matched they are assigned an official. The Official that is assigned to Cassia scares me. I kind of think she is pure evil even though she comes off as being nice and helpful.

The guys of the love triangle, Ky and Xander, are both great. Xander is the one Cassia is matched with. She is supposed to marry him when they turns 21. Ky is someone Cassia cannot have, but he may very well be her true match. I enjoyed watching Ky and Cassia fall in love, but I feel kind of bad for Xander. He obviously loves Cassia and would do anything for her. I'm excited to see what happens in this triangle in the next book!

I am definitely excited to read the next book in the series. I need to know what happens next! I absolutely loved this book because it was powerful and even intense at times. I enjoyed Ally Condie's writing from the beginning to the end. I cannot wait to see what she has in store for us next.

Rating: 4.5/5

  1. Nice review! I thought this book was fantastic and it was one of my favorite reads of 2010. I did end up liking Delirium by Lauren Oliver a little more but I loved Ally Condie's world building.
