Review: My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult

Synopsis:
New York Times bestselling author Jodi Picoult is widely acclaimed for her keen insights into the hearts and minds of real people. Now she tells the emotionally riveting story of a family torn apart by conflicting needs and a passionate love that triumphs over human weakness.

Anna is not sick, but she might as well be. By age thirteen, she has undergone countless surgeries, transfusions, and shots so that her older sister, Kate, can somehow fight the leukemia that has plagued her since childhood. The product of preimplantation genetic diagnosis, Anna was conceived as a bone marrow match for Kate -- a life and a role that she has never challenged...until now. Like most teenagers, Anna is beginning to question who she truly is. But unlike most teenagers, she has always been defined in terms of her sister -- and so Anna makes a decision that for most would be unthinkable, a decision that will tear her family apart and have perhaps fatal consequences for the sister she loves.

My Sister's Keeper examines what it means to be a good parent, a good sister, a good person. Is it morally correct to do whatever it takes to save a child's life, even if that means infringing upon the rights of another? Is it worth trying to discover who you really are, if that quest makes you like yourself less? Should you follow your own heart, or let others lead you? Once again, in My Sister's Keeper, Jodi Picoult tackles a controversial real-life subject with grace, wisdom, and sensitivity.

Review:
My Sister's Keeper is one of those books that you will either love or hate. I ended up loving it, but I know many people really hate it mostly because of how it ends. I cannot say that I liked the ending because it was extremely sad and will have you crying, but I liked it because it was completely unexpected. I thought the book was heading in one direction, but Jodi Picoult did a complete 180 with the plot. I was surprised and even shocked by what happened. If you read this book, I would keep some tissues nearby.

Although I would classify My Sister's Keeper as a tear-jerker, it is so much more than that. There are many controversial topics that come up that question your morals. It is the kind of book that will make you think and will stay with you long after you finish reading it. Each character contributes to the book in some way as they deal with their problems. I really liked the characters in this book, especially Anna. She was such a strong person for a girl so young. I also really liked her brother, Jesse, even though he is definitely a trouble maker. My least favorite character was the mother, Sara, because she clearly favored one child over the others.

My Sister's Keeper is a great book. Actually, I would even go as far as saying that it is a powerful book. I really enjoyed Jodi Picoult's writing. I was surprised that I actually liked the different point of view's each chapter because it gave the story so many different perspectives. The plot was excellent. I liked being surprised by the ending even though I did end up crying. In my opinion, the book is so much better than the movie. Actually, I think the movie completely messed up the story that Jodi Picoult wrote, so read the book and do not watch the movie.

Waiting On Wednesday (41)...

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that I am eagerly anticipating.

This week's Waiting on Wednesday pick is: Mermaid by Carolyn Turgeon

Publication Date: March 3, 2011

Synopsis:
he story of two very different women, one mortal, one mermaid, and the clash between worlds best kept apart... It is a cold day at the end of the world when a young woman, a princess in hiding, looks out across a Northern sea and sees something she could not have seen. It looks...it can't be. It looks like a mermaid's tail. And, as she looks more closely, she sees that the mermaid is dragging a drowning sailor in her arms. Because, only hours before, another princess, the daughter of the sea queen, has decided to risk everything and take a look at the world above the sea: the world of mortals. And there she finds a storm, a shipwreck, a sailor, and sets in train events which will change both women's worlds forever.

Mermaids have always interested me, but I have not read many books about them. I am looking forward to it!

BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)

Review: Prince Caspian (Chronicles of Narnia #4) by C.S. Lewis

Synopsis:
Narnia has been at peace since Peter, Susan, Lucy and Edmund helped rid the kingdom of the evil White Witch. But the Sons of Adam and the Daughters of Eve have returned to their own world and a dark presence now rules this once harmonious land...

Wicked King Miraz has imposed a pernicious new order of persecution and imprisonment, but the King's nephew and rightful heir, young Prince Caspian, realizing the evil of his uncle's regime, vows to revive Narnia's glorious past. Fearing for his life, he is forced to flee and calls on the four children, the magic of the mighty lion Aslan, and an army of fauns, dwarfs and woodland spirits to help him in his seemingly impossible task.

Review:
Prince Caspian is another great installment in the Chronicles of Narnia. C.S. Lewis is an amazing writer and story teller, and this book proves to be no exception. I really like that Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy are back in this book as the main characters. I enjoyed reading about the Pevensie children rediscover Narnia. About 1,000 years have passed since they ruled Narnia, so Narnia looks a but different. I loved how Aslan revealed himself to the children one by one showing that the others should just believe. Narnia is such a magical world that I think anyone can enjoy reading about. I know I will reread these books in the future, and when I have kids I will read this lovely series to them as well.

Holiday Break Reading Challenge Activity #7: Busting Bookshelves

For this activity, I must show you all a picture of my bookshelf...well here it is!

No, these are not all of my books, but these are most of them. As far as my system goes, I try to organize my books, but I am not very good at it. I will try to explain my "organization" by each shelf:

Top Shelf-
  • signed books
  • ARCs
  • books to review
  • Twilight
Second Shelf-
  • YA in the back
  • recently bought and have not read in the pile in the front
Middle Shelf-
  • YA in the back
  • books I traded for using PaperBack Swap in the pile to the left (haven't read them yet)
  • borrowed books are in the pile on the right (haven't read those either)
Fourth Shelf-
  • Adult books in the back
  • Pile to the left are books I bought, but have not read
  • Stack to the right are more books I still need to read
Last Shelf-
  • In the back are all of my animal books from books I read as a child to books about horse health
  • Both stacks are books I have not read yet
My bookshelf is a little out of control. I plan on going through all of my books soon and finding new homes for the ones I do not want anymore. I also want to organize it better, but I do not know how I can. Any suggestions?

Review: ttfn by Lauren Myracle

Synopsis:
Told entirely in instant messages, this sequel to the hugely popular ttyl follows Maddie, Zoe, and Angela through the new flirtations, fixations, and frustrations of eleventh grade.

Angela has just found out that her family is moving to El Cerrito, California, and she seriously doesn't know how she'll survive without her best friends. Maddie makes some really bad moves with Clive, a pot-smoking hipster who wants to be "friends with benefits." And Zoe finds herself falling for Doug, the sweet poet who has had a crush on Angela forever-a crush that Angela has come to count on.

Review:
ttfn was definitely an interesting book. It follows best friends Angela, Zoe and Maddie. It is a sequel to ttyl, but I never read the first book and could follow the plot fine. I really did not think I would enjoy this book, so I was surprised to find myself enjoying it about halfway through. The entire book is written in instant messages, so it was sometimes hard to follow the IM lingo.

Just a bit of a warning: there are many bad words and mature subjects discussed in this book. I did think this was a fun book, but it was just not my thing. If you want to read a book written in a completely different way, this is the book for you.

Review: The Horse and His Boy (Chronicles of Narnia #3) by C.S. Lewis

Synopsis:
Shasta is a young boy living in Calormene with a cruel man who claims to be his father. One night he overhears his "father" offering to sell him as a slave, so Shasta makes a break and sets out for the North. He meets Bree, a talking horse who becomes his companion. On their way they encounter Aravis, a high-born girl escaping an arranged marriage, and her talking horse. Despite their differences the children and horses learn to work together to reach the freedom they long for. In the meantime, they uncover a Calormene plot to conquer Narnia.

Review:
The Horse and His Boy may be my favorite book in the Chronicles of Narnia. I love everything about it. The main characters are interesting, and their adventures to Narnia are exciting. It takes place during the time that the Pevensies ruled Narnia as Kings and Queens. What is different about this one is that it actually starts in the world of Narnia (although actually takes place outside of Narnia). There is not any children going through a wardrobe or using a ring to get there.

I remember loving this book as a kid because of the talking horses. What little girl would not love a story with talking horses in it? This book follows the adventures of the boy, Shasta, and the talking horse, Bree, as they make their way to Narnia. Along the way, they meet a girl, Aravis, and another talking horse named Hwin. I really liked Aravis because she is a strong girl character. She may very well be the strongest girl character of the whole series. Of course, there is a great deal of Christian allegory, which I think is great for the kids.

I definitely recommend reading this book and the other books in the Chronicles of Narnia. It is a fun read that I think most people will enjoy.

Holiday Break Reading Challenge Activity #2: Your Current Book In Pictures

I am currently reading Shadow Days: A Nightshade Novella by Andrea Cremer.

It starts off with Shay getting a phone call from his uncle who tells him they are moving to Vail, Colorado:After taking a private jet to Colorado, Shay sees his new home for the first time. He is surprised by how big it is.

His uncle's job requires a lot of travel time, so he leaves Shay alone to get settled in the large estate. Shay has one good night of sleep, but after that he wakes up at 5:00 am each morning after hearing a crash. He has no idea where it came from. All he knows is that his new home is creepy with creepy pictures and statues all over the place.

His uncle only gave him one rule: Don't go in the library. Naturally, Shay becomes curious and turns to his facebook and blog friends to help him pick the lock.

Inside the library, Shay finds ordinary looking books, but they have interesting patterns inside them that seem to mean something:

What will happen next? I am eager to find out :)

Review: Shadows of Myth and Legend by E.J. Stevens

Synopsis:
A collection of dark faerie tales inspired by folklore, myth and legend told in the haunting lyrical style of dark poet E.J. Stevens. Filled with poems about vampires, werewolves, and other paranormal creatures of the night.

Review:
Shadows of Myth and Legend by E.J. Stevens is a book of poetry. E.J. Stevens is definitely a talented poet. I enjoyed reading her dark poems. The book is separated into four sections: Earth & Below, Air & Spirit, Fire & War, and Water & Ice. I do not usually read poetry, so I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked these poems. They have a dark and Gothic feel with creatures such as zombies, vampires, werewolves, unicorns, elves, fairies, and more. E.J. Stevens covers many myths and legends in this book. I think anyone who likes poetry will enjoy this short book. Those (like me) who do not read poetry that often, but like dark myths will also enjoy this.

Mega SwagBucks Day! (6)

Search & Win

Every Friday is Mega Swagbucks Day! It is a day where you have a higher chance of earning larger amounts of Swag Bucks. (The largest I've gotten is 40, but I know there are higher ones out there).

If you do not know what Swagbucks is, it is basically a search engine where you earn Swag Bucks by searching for anything and everything on the web. When you get enough, you can redeem your Swag Bucks for prizes! My favorite prize is the Amazon giftcard because I can use it to buy books, which is great for a book blogger.

To start earning Swag Bucks all you have to do is sign up. It is absolutely free, and it is a great way to get free prizes! I use it all the time to look up new books I've read about on other blogs...actually I use it to look up pretty much everything. So, if you want, sign up here and start searching and earning!

Does anyone out there use Swagbucks? Do you like it?

The Book Blogger Hop is here! It is hosted by Crazy For Books, so go check them out if you have not already :)

This week's question is:

"What do you consider the most important in a story: the plot or the characters?"

Answer:

I guess I consider the characters the most important in a story. If the characters are not interesting, the plot will fail no matter how great it is. I think the characters contribute to the plot more than anything.

If you are participating or you found me through the Hop, please leave me a comment. Have a fun Book Blogger Hop Friday!

Review: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (Chronicles of Narnia #2) by C.S. Lewis

Synopsis:
The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe, completed in the winter of 1949 & published in 1950, tells the story of four ordinary children: Peter, Susan, Edmund & Lucy Pevensie. They discover a wardrobe in Prof. Digory Kirke's house that leads to the magical land of Narnia, which is currently under the spell of a witch. The four children fulfill an ancient, mysterious prophecy while in Narnia. The Pevensie children help Aslan (the Turkish word for lion) & his army save Narnia from the evil White Witch, who's reigned over the Narnia in winter for 100 years.

Review:
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is a classic tale like no other. The story follows Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy as they plunge into the world of Narnia. Digory from The Magician's Nephew makes an appearance, but he is now known as Professor Kirke. Of course, the White Witch also reappears as does Aslan. If you have read The Magician's Nephew you know how the wardrobe came to be.

The Pevensie's are great characters. I actually liked them more than the characters in the previous book. Edmund did annoy me at times, but I think he was supposed to be like that since he did betray his siblings. Great story from beginning to end.

I thought The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was a fun book to read. There is a lot of symbolism in this book that relates to Christianity. I think people of all ages enjoy this book, so if you have not read it, I recommend you do.

This week's Waiting on Wednesday pick is: City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare

Publication Date: April 5, 2011

Synopsis:
Love, blood, betrayal and revenge — the stakes are higher than ever in City of Fallen Angels. Simon Lewis is having some trouble adjusting to his new life as a vampire, especially now that he hardly sees his best friend Clary, who is caught up in training to be a Shadowhunter—and spending time with her new boyfriend Jace. Not to mention that Simon doesn’t quite know how to handle the pressure of not-quite-dating two girls at once. What’s a daylight-loving vampire to do? Simon decides he needs a break and heads out of the city—only to discover that sinister events are following him. Realizing that the war they thought they’d won might not yet be over, Simon has to call on his Shadowhunter friends to save the day — if they can put their own splintering relationships on hold long enough to rise to the challenge.

As I know many people are, I am so excited for this book!

Feel free to share what books you are waiting for in the comments.

Teaser Tuesday (39)

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.

Anyone can play along, do the following:

•Grab your current read

•Open to a random page

•Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)

•Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

This week's Teaser Tuesday comes from page 468 of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader by C.S. Lewis:

"They got up, all with swords drawn, and formed themselves into a solid mass with Lucy in the middle and Reepicheep on her shoulder. It was nicer than the waiting about and everyone felt fonder of everyone else than at ordinary times."

Sorry this is so late! I have not had much time for my blog recently, but I am going to try to make time!

Share your teaser if you want!

Book Blogger Hop (21)

The Book Blogger Hop is here! It is hosted by Crazy For Books, and every week a different question is asked.

This week's question is:

"What is the thing you like most about reading book blogs? Is it the reviews, author guest posts, articles, giveaways, or something else entirely?"

Answer:

I would say all of the above. I love that book blogs provide a wide variety of posts. It makes it more exciting to read. I do love discovering new books through reviews, so I guess book reviews are my favorite :)

If you are participating or you found me through the Hop, please leave me a comment. Have a fun Book Blogger Hop Friday!

Review: The Magician's Nephew (Chronicles of Narnia #1) by C.S. Lewis

Synopsis:
When Digory and Polly are tricked by Digory's peculiar Uncle Andrew into becoming part of an experiment, they set off on the adventure of a lifetime. What happens to the children when they touch Uncle Andrew's magic rings is far beyond anything even the old magician could have imagined.

Hurtled into the Wood between the Worlds, the children soon find that they can enter many worlds through the mysterious pools there. In one world they encounter the evil Queen Jadis, who wreaks havoc in the streets of London when she is accidentally brought back with them. When they finally manage to pull her out of London, unintentionally taking along Uncle Andrew and a coachman with his horse, they find themselves in what will come to be known as the land of Narnia.

Review:
The Magician's Nephew is a lovely start to the Chronicles of Narnia. In this book, Lewis explains how the world of Narnia came to be. It was fun to read about Polly and Digory's adventures to different worlds. I like how it was explained how the wardrobe came to be along with how the White Witch came to be in Narnia.

If you have not read this book, I definitely recommend that you do. It is an exceptional classic. The story is amazing and beautiful. People of all ages will enjoy this book, I think. It has something for everyone.

Rating: 5/5

Waiting On Wednesday (38)...

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that I am eagerly anticipating.

This week's Waiting on Wednesday pick is: Awakemed (House of Night #8) by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast

Publication Date: January 4, 2011

Synopsis:
Exonerated by the Vampyre High Council and returned to her positio
n of High Priestess at Tulsa’s House of Night, Neferet has sworn vengeance on Zoey. Dominion over Kalona is only one of the weapons she plans to use against Z. But Zoey has found sanctuary on the Isle of Skye and is being groomed by Queen Sgiach to take over for her there. Being Queen would be cool, wouldn’t it? Why should she return to Tulsa? After losing her human consort, Heath, she will never be the same – and her relationship with her super-hot-warrior, Stark, may never be the same either…

And what about Stevie Rae and Rephaim? The Raven Mocker refuses to be used against Stevie Rae, but what choice does he have when no one in the entire world, including Zoey, would be okay with their relationship? Does he betray his father or his heart?

In the pulse-pounding 8th book in the bestselling House of Night series, how far will the bonds of friendship stretch and how strong are the ties that bind one girl’s heart?

I just have to continue this series. I am mostly interested in Stevie Rae and Rephaim's relationship. I am looking forward to seeing what happens with them.

Feel free to share your WoW pick in the comments.
