Review: The DUFF (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) by Kody Keplinger

Synopsis:
Seventeen-year-old Bianca Piper is cynical and loyal, and she doesn’t think she’s the prettiest of her friends by a long shot. She’s also way too smart to fall for the charms of man-slut and slimy school hottie Wesley Rush. In fact, Bianca hates him. And when he nicknames her “the Duff,” she throws her Coke in his face.

But things aren’t so great at home right now, and Bianca is desperate for a distraction. She ends up kissing Wesley. Worse, she likes it. Eager for escape, Bianca throws herself into a closeted enemies-with-benefits relationship with him.

Until it all goes horribly awry. It turns out Wesley isn’t such a bad listener, and his life is pretty screwed up, too. Suddenly Bianca realizes with absolute horror that she’s falling for the guy she thought she hated more than anyone.

Review:
The DUFF was an amazing book. I honestly did not expect to like it as much as I did. The main character, Bianca is a fairly mature teenager. Her mother is always traveling, and her father just seems to be there not really doing much. She pretty much takes care of herself. I loved her sarcasm, her voice, and how tough she is. Her family problems do hurt her, so she turns to sex to forget. I don't condone that kind of behavior, but let's face it...it happens more than it is acknowledged.

The romance in this book is hot! Although Wesley comes off as a jerk for calling Bianca the DUFF of her group of friends (Designated Ugly Fat Friend), I ended up loving him. He does come off as an arrogant jerk who is most definitely a player, but Bianca discovers his sweet side. I really liked how he handled the situation with Bianca's dad. It made me like him even more. I loved how Bianca hated Wesley with a passion at first because it made her romance with Wesley so much more thrilling and hot! The hate definitely added to the passion. Sure, it was obvious she would fall for him.

The DUFF is now one of my favorite books. It is the kind of book that will stay with me for a long time. It made me smile, laugh, and even cry. Kody Keplinger is a talented writer and story teller. She gave Bianca an amazing voice that I enjoyed reading. I loved everything about it. I think it is the kind of book that every girl can relate to at some point in their lives. All girls feel like the DUFF at one time or another; I know I have. I would recommend this book to mature readers because there is a good amount of language, sex, and even violence.

Rating: 5/5

  4. Yay! It's one of my favorites, too. I loved it. Loved Wesley. And, yes, it was purty steamy. But, it all worked so very well. Thanks for sharing in the DUFF love.
