Review: Shadow of the Sun (Timeless #1) by Laura Kreitzer

Synopsis:
Gabriella's past is a mystery, but that never stopped her from achieving her goals. As a supernatural specialist, and far more intelligent than anyone her age, she has always been ignored by her peers. Because of the isolation she has always felt, she put her life and soul into her job. Being a supernatural specialist hasn't given her the divine intervention she always longed for, until one day a shipment arrives from Italy containing three dead bodies with an uncanny ability to regenerate. Gabriella is frightened and intrigued, but not as scared as she becomes when a dark creature attacks her.

As the bodies come back to life, the plot takes an unexpected twist that you won't see coming. The supernatural world only begins to unfold before her as angels appear, her dreams start to haunt her, and the very past she has forgotten comes back with startling clarity. Romance blooms, escape plans are made, an assassin is out to kill her, and death is only around the corner. But what is more terrifying than all of it is the fact she is the chosen one, the Illuminator, the one who will save them all.
Review:
Shadow of the Sun is a brilliant book. I was completely blown away by the story! I loved how it was written. Laura Kreitzer is clearly a talented writer. The words flowed together effortlessly in a way that made it addicting to read.

Gabriella is a great heroine. She is so selfless, and her actions show it. She definitely deserves to be the chosen one and the Illuminator. Gabriella has never been ordinary. At the young age of 24, she has already had her PhD for five years. Obviously, she is a kind of genius. She works as a supernatural specialist in Oregon, which is one of the most interesting jobs I have ever read about in a book. I kind of wish I could be a supernatural specialist.

I loved the angels in this book. They were all such intriguing characters. Andrew is probably my favorite of the angels because of how much he cares for Gabriella. Their connection is amazing. I would describe it as a soul mate sort of thing. I am excited to see where it goes in the next book.

Shadow of the Sun is an exciting book and not to mention interesting. There are so many twists and turns that I never knew what was going to happen next. Many of the events that happened actually surprised me especially the death of one of the characters. The only thing that I had a problem with were the battle scenes. A few times during the battle/action scenes, I had to reread some parts because they got a little confusing. Besides that, I think that the Timeless series may be my new favorite series. I am so glad I have the next book, Soul Stalker, sitting right next me because I really NEED to know what happens next.

Shadow of the Sun is a great read, and I would even say a must read. Being 510 pages long, the mere size of it did intimidate me at first, but it is a page turner. I could not put it down because it was so mesmerizing! I ended up reading it in two days because once one chapter ended, I needed to read the next one. A very enjoyable book that has a bit of everything for everyone.

Review: The Fledgling Handbook 101 by P.C. Cast

Synopsis:
Merry meet, fledgling. I trust this guide will serve you well…. Every vampyre fledgling who arrives at the House of Night receives a copy of "The Fledgling Handbook 101", and now, fans can have one, too, with this gorgeous must-have edition. Inside you’ll find original stories, the complete vampyre history, inside info into rituals, vamp biology, and the Change, and much more.

Review:
The Fledgling Handbook 101 is definitely for the fans of the House of Night series. Being a fan of the House of Night series, I enjoyed this book. I liked reading the handbook that was talked about in some of the books. I enjoyed seeing what each of the class emblems actually looked like. I also loved the fact that this book is so colorful. There are plenty of pictures for us visual folks out there. This handbook also gives you an insight into what it means to be a new fledgling from talking about physical changes to rituals and even vampyre history. I thought it was interesting to see that Zoey has in fact broken some of the fledgling rules such as fledglings are not allowed to have human consorts to fledglings are not allowed to accept the oath of a warrior. I guess Zoey is an exception to the rules since she is so special.

If you are a big fan of the House of Night series, I would definitely recommend this book to you. Otherwise, I do not think you would enjoy it too much.

Review: A Kiss In Time by Alex Flinn

Synopsis:

Talia fell under a spell. . . .
Jack broke the curse.

I was told to beware the accursed spindle, but it was so enchanting, so hypnotic. . . .

I was looking for a little adventure the day I ditched my tour group. But finding a comatose town, with a hot-looking chick asleep in it, was so not what I had in mind.

I awakened in the same place but in another time—to a stranger's soft kiss.

I couldn't help kissing her. Sometimes you just have to kiss someone. I didn't know this would happen.

Now I am in dire trouble because my father, the king, says I have brought ruin upon our country. I have no choice but to run away with this commoner!

Now I'm stuck with a bratty princess and a trunk full of her jewels. . . . The good news: My parents will freak!

Think you have dating issues? Try locking lips with a snoozing stunner who turns out to be 316 years old. Can a kiss transcend all—even time?

Review:
A Kiss In Time exceeded my expectations. I absolutely loved this retelling of Sleeping Beauty. It was exciting to read as the Sleeping Beauty, Talia, wakes up in the twenty first century thanks to a normal teenager. This book was completely entertaining. The banter between Jack and Talia was so funny at times. It was amusing to see Talia try to learn about this new world that she must now live in.

I liked that both Jack and Talia's point of views were given in alternating chapters. It was nice to see what each of them thought. I thought it was funny that they both started out essentially hating each other, but they grew to love each other. In fact, they actually changed each other for the better. Before kissing Talia, Jack was a typical lazy, teenage boy who only cared about partying, but he grew throughout the book. He realized he actually has a dream that he wants to pursue, and that he does not want to follow his parents' plans for him to become a businessman. Talia become a better person, too. Before, she was just a spoiled princess that got almost whatever she want, but she grew to be a nice person. I like that she lost her obnoxious nature and became a good person. I especially liked when Talia helped Jack's little sister, Meryl. Meryl was a quiet, self conscious girl that just hid in the shadows of her "friends," but Talia took the time to bring her out of her shell.

A Kiss In Time was a fun read. It was an exciting, fast-paced retelling of Sleeping Beauty. I actually like it better than Beastly, the other book I have read by Alex Flinn. I love the way Alex Flinn writes, and the stories she has come up with are great. I am definitely going to read her other books in the future.

Review: Hold Still by Nina LaCour

Synopsis:
An arresting story about starting over after a friend’s suicide, from a breakthrough new voice in YA fiction.

dear caitlin, there are so many things that i want so badly to tell you but i just can’t.

Devastating, hopeful, hopeless, playful . . . in words and illustrations, Ingrid left behind a painful farewell in her journal for Caitlin. Now Caitlin is left alone, by loss and by choice, struggling to find renewed hope in the wake of her best friend’s suicide. With the help of family and newfound friends, Caitlin will encounter first love, broaden her horizons, and start to realize that true friendship didn’t die with Ingrid. And the journal which once seemed only to chronicle Ingrid’s descent into depression, becomes the tool by which Caitlin once again reaches out to all those who loved Ingrid—and Caitlin herself.

Review:
Hold Still is an amazing book. It took me by surprise because it was so good! Nina LaCour is an extremely talented writer, which you can clearly see in her strong writing. This book felt real to me. You could just feel the emotions coming off of the page.

The characters were well-developed. Even the minor characters had depth. Caitlin is a beautiful narrator. I loved following her as she dealt with her best friend's suicide. The love interest, Taylor, was so adorable! I kind of wish I found a guy like that in high school. He was such a sweet guy and just what Caitlin needed to start living her life again. My favorite part was when he let Caitlin drive his car. It was such a cute moment! Dylan, Caitlin's new friend, is probably the best character in the book. I love that she did not tolerate fakeness from anyone. She knew who she was and did not care what anyone else thought. Even Ingrid had depth, played a major role in the story, and felt alive to me even though she is dead throughout the entire book. She came alive during flashbacks and through her journal.

Hold Still is a great book . I absolutely loved it. If you enjoyed Looking for Alaska by John Green or Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher, you will definitely enjoy this book. I would recommend it to older teens and up as it does deal with tough subjects, but they are written so beautifully (props to Nina LaCour). This book is so beautiful, but it should not be taken lightly. It will take you on an emotional ride as you journey with Caitlin through her mourning process.

Bloggiesta Mini-Challenge: 10 Things Bloggers Should Not Do

Hannah from Word Lily is hosting this Bloggiesta challenge. Here are the rules:
  1. Read the post, 10 Things Bloggers Should Not Do.
  2. Rate yourself (on a scale of 1 to 5, 5 being muy excellente) on each point. How are you doing?
  3. Brainstorm examples of what you can/will do to improve your ratings in those areas that could use improvement. And/or:
  4. If you feel you’re doing particularly great in one area, share examples of how you’ve reached such excellence.
1. You Must Not Expect Results Overnight:
I think I am pretty good on this point. I never expected to get where it is today. I started Swords for Fighting because I wanted a place to keep track of the books I read. It turned into so much more than that, though. I have always blogged for myself because I like to do it.
Rating: 5/5

2. You Must Not Ignore Your Readers:
I try not to ignore my readers, but I know I can work on this. I do try to reply to every comment I get, but it is hard when my readers don't have an email I can respond to.
Rating: 3.5/5

3. You Must Not Scrape Another Bloggers Content:
I credit my sources, and I don't steal content from other bloggers. I am definitely good on this part.
Rating:5/5

4. You Must Not Expect Success Without Promoting: Many people think blogging is like setting up a shop at the road side and that all they need to do is wait for people to start finding them. Build and they will come, as the saying goes. This unfortunately is not true. Even if you have great content you’ll need to work your butt off getting people to visit your blog and read it.
I definitely need to promote more. One of the ways I am going to do this is by making a Facebook page for Swords for Fighting. I hope to have it up and running before Bloggiesta ends!
Rating: 2/5

5. You Must Not Be Another Blogger:
I try to be myself all the time.
Rating: 5/5

6. You Must Not Fail To Update Your Blog Regularly: You will see some bloggers telling you they want to be a problogger, only to leave their blog without updates for weeks. If you can’t commit to updating your blog regularly, why would you expect people to commit to reading it regularly?
I update almost everyday, so I have no problem here.
Rating: 5/5

7. You Must Not Ignore SEO:
I have no idea what SEO is, but I am going to learn all about it after this post!
Rating:1/5

8. You Must Not Ignore Networking:
I do a small amount of networking. I definitely need to do more.
Rating: 2/5

9. You Must Not Have An Unreadable/Unnavigable Site:
I think Swords for Fighting is easy to read and navigate through. If anyone has any suggestions on how I can improve it, let me know!
Rating: 4/5

10. You Must Not Throw Mud Around:
I definitely don't attack other bloggers. I think people who do that are petty. I know it happens, but I don't understand it.

Review: Dust City by Robert Paul Weston

    Synopsis:
Who's afraid of the big bad wolf?

    His son, that's who.

Ever since his father's arrest for the murder of Little Red Riding Hood, teen wolf Henry Whelp has kept a low profile in a Home for Wayward Wolves . . . until a murder at the Home leads Henry to believe his father may have been framed.

Now, with the help of his kleptomaniac roommate, Jack, and a daring she-wolf named Fiona, Henry will have to venture deep into the heart of Dust City; a rundown, gritty metropolis where fairydust is craved by everyone and controlled by a dangerous mob of Water Nixies and their crime boss leader, Skinner.

Can Henry solve the mystery of his family's sinister past? Or, like his father before him, is he destined for life as a big bad wolf?

    Review:
Dust City is different from any book I have ever read. I would classify it as a fairy tale re-imagining, but it is so much more than that. The main character, Henry Whelp, has had to live his whole life being the son of the big, bad wolf who killed Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother. He has a bad reputation and is in a form of juvie because he is a wolf even though he has not done anything wrong. Dust City is a world where selling synthetic fairy dust is the main money source. Synthetic fairy dust replaced true fairy dust ever since the fairies disappeared. Fairy dust is pretty much the it drug of Dust City. Anyways, Henry escapes juvie because he believes he knows where the fairies are hiding and there is a chance he can clear his father's name.

I definitely enjoyed this book because it was so original. Robert Paul Weston took the story of the big, bad wolf and made it his own. I loved that some common fairy tale characters were in Dust City. Snow White came into the story as Detective White, a kick butt kind of character who could definitely hold her own. Cindy Rella (Cinderella) wears uncomfortable looking glass heels. Of course there is also Henry's best friend, Jack, from Jack and the Beanstalk.

Henry meets his partner in crime, Fiona, while he is at his Home for Wayward Wolves. Fiona is one smart she-wolf who cares more about her troubled brother, Roy, than she probably should. I liked Fiona because she is non-judgmental. It was nice to see her not judge Henry and actually look for the best in him. My favorite part of the book was whenever they were together.

If you like fairy tale retellings, you will definitely enjoy this book. It is amusing and fun to read! There is a fairly intense torture scene to look out for, but I think most of us can handle it. The story is interesting, and the world that Robert Paul Weston has created is intriguing.

    Waiting On Wednesday (44)...

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that I am eagerly anticipating.

This week's Waiting on Wednesday pick is: Red Riding Hood by Sarah-Blakley Cartwright

    Publication Date: January 25, 2011

    Synopsis:
The body of a young girl is discovered in a field of wheat. Her flesh mutilated by telltale claw marks. The Wolf has broken the peace.

When Valerie learns that her sister has been killed by the legendary creature, she finds herself at the center of a dark mystery, one that has plagued her village for g
enerations. It is revealed that the werewolf lives among them, and everyone in the village immediately becomes a suspect. Could her secret love Peter be behind the attacks on her town? Is it her betrothed, Henry? Or someone even closer to her?

As the men in the village hunt for the beast, Valerie turns to her grandmother for help. She gives Valerie a handmade red riding cloak, and guides her through the web of lies and deception that has held her town together for so long. Will Valerie discover the werewolf's identity before the town is ripped apart?

This is a dangerous new vision of a classic fairy tale, the happy ending could be hard to find.

Ever since I saw the trailer for this movie, I have wanted to read this book! It is actually being released next week! Hopefully I can get my hands on it soon.

Review: The Last Battle (Chronicles of Narnia #7) by C.S. Lewis

    Synopsis:
Many Narnian years have passed since Eustace and Jill helped ensure the Royal line. But when they are jerked back violently into this strangest of lands they find the present King in danger and Narnia facing its darkest hour. With Eustace and Jill at his side, the King, the noble unicorn Jewel and a few remaining loyal subjects must stand fast against the powers of evil and darkness and fight the Last Battle to decide the future of this once glorious kingdom.

    Review:
The Last Battle is an amazing ending to a wonderful series. Yes, it was sad at times, but I thought it was the perfect way to finish it up. It starts off with an ape named Shift along with his donkey "friend" named Puzzle finding a lion skin. Shift then starts formulating a plan that involves Puzzle wearing the lion skin and pretending to be Aslan. I really did not like Shift, but that was the point. He was a horrible ape who was extremely annoying and arrogant. He ends up helping the Calormenes take over Narnia, which is horrible!

King Tirian is captured, so he ends up getting help from Eustace and Jill. I like Eustace and Jill in this book the most probably because they are a bit older and more mature. There are many deaths in this book from the battle. Unfortunately or fortunately (depends how you look at it) Narnia comes to its end, but the good news is the characters get to go to Aslan's Country AKA Heaven.

What I loved about this book was that all of my favorite characters from the previous books make an appearance. I did not realize how much I missed them until they reappeared. There are a few new characters that I ended up loving. One of them being Jewel the unicorn. Jewel is such a devoted friend to King Tirian and a great addition to the world of Narnia. The saddest part of this book for me was finding out that Susan does not believe in Narnia any more. Still, this is probably one of favorites of the Chronicles of Narnia.

Like I said, The Last Battle is the perfect book to end the Chronicles of Narnia. If you have not read this series, you must! It does have a few sad parts, but I liked the way it ended. I am so glad I took the time to read this series. It was definitely worth it because it is so beautiful! Narnia is a world that everyone should explore at least once. It is such a beautiful place, and I kind of wish I could live there.

Review: Beautiful Darkness (Caster Chronicles #2) by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

    Synopsis:

Ethan Wate used to think of Gatlin, the small Southern town he had always called home, as a place where nothing ever changed. Then he met mysterious newcomer Lena Duchannes, who revealed a secret world that had been hidden in plain sight all along. A Gatlin that harbored ancient secrets beneath its moss-covered oaks and cracked sidewalks. A Gatlin where a curse has marked Lena's family of powerful Supernaturals for generations. A Gatlin where impossible, magical, life-altering events happen.

    Sometimes life-ending.

Together they can face anything Gatlin throws at them, but after suffering a tragic loss, Lena starts to pull away, keeping secrets that test their relationship. And now that Ethan's eyes have been opened to the darker side of Gatlin, there's no going back. Haunted by strange visions only he can see, Ethan is pulled deeper into his town's tangled history and finds himself caught up in the dangerous network of underground passageways endlessly crisscrossing the South, where nothing is as it seems.

    Review:
I was super excited to read Beautiful Darkness. I have been waiting to read this book ever since I finished Beautiful Creatures, and it did not disappoint. From the moment I opened Beautiful Darkness and started reading, I was immersed in Ethan's world. Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl are absolutely amazing to have written this book. Their writing is absolutely intoxicating. I loved how Kami and Margaret set the scene for this book. The very first page brought back all of the love I had for Beautiful Creatures. I love their writing because it feels like I am right there in Gaitlin with Ethan, and I was excited to discover what happens.

I enjoy being in Ethan's head because most books I read are from a girl's point of view. It is nice to hear what the guy thinks once in a while, and Ethan definitely has a lot going on in his life. He discovers something new about himself, and he puts it to good use. I felt bad for Ethan in this book because Lena, his girlfriend and the love of his life, pushes him away throughout the book. For most of the book, he could not reach Lena like he used to.

There were many times throughout reading that Lena really annoyed me. I hated how much she was acting like a completely different person. I did not like how she treated Ethan especially when she ran off with another guy. She just seemed to ignore him and was letting herself drift away from him. She may have been doing it to protect him, but I still did not like it. I am not saying I hate Lena because I don't. I actually do like her most of the time. She was just in a difficult place in this book. She believes she killed her Uncle Macon, so she becomes emotionally broken causing her to push Ethan away even though he wants to help her.

I was surprised to see how much of a role Ethan's mother played in the story. It was interesting to see that she can still influence his life even though she is dead. I was also surprised to see Ridley practically changing sides. In Beautiful Creatures, she was all about making Ethan's life miserable, but now she actually ends up helping Ethan save Lena. A new character also joins Ethan's group of friends. Her name is Liv, and she is a Keeper-in-training. I enjoyed her personality and humor, so I hope she is in future books.

Beautiful Darkness is a must read (but read Beautiful Creatures first if you have not already). I liked it better than the first book if that is at all possible. It was addicting from the beginning to the end. I loved the mystery of the story and how unpredictable it was. It had me guessing and making up all kinds of crazy theories! I am looking forward to reading the next book in the Caster Chronicles.

    Book Blogger Hop (24)

The Book Blogger Hop is here! It is hosted by Crazy For Books, and here is this week's question:

"Why do you read the genre that you do? What draws you to it?"

    Answer:
I read a wide variety of genres, so I guess what draws me to the books I read is the story itself. If it sounds interesting whether it is YA, paranormal, fantasy, contemporary, etc, I will read it. I do mostly read YA books probably because there are such a wide variety of genres within YA.

If you are participating or you found me through the Hop, please leave me a comment. Have a fun Book Blogger Hop Friday!

    Review: Matched by Ally Condie

    Synopsis:

Cassia has always trusted the Society to make the right choices for her: what to read, what to watch, what to believe. So when Xander's face appears on-screen at her Matching ceremony, Cassia knows with complete certainty that he is her ideal mate . . . until she sees Ky Markham's face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black.

The Society tells her it's a glitch, a rare malfunction, and that she should focus on the happy life she's destined to lead with Xander. But Cassia can't stop thinking about Ky, and as they slowly fall in love, Cassia begins to doubt the Society's infallibility and is faced with an impossible choice: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she's known and a path that no one else has dared to follow.

    Review:
Matched is an amazing dystopian book. I liked it because it could be realistic. I feel like the Society in Matched could become a reality if we are not careful.

In Matched, the Society controls everything. What you wear, what and when you eat, where you work, where you live, who you will marry, when you will die, and everything else in between! It is pretty scary to think about never being able to decide anything for yourself.

The main character, Cassia, goes along with everything in the beginning, but she soon starts to question everything and take some risks. I think her Grandfather is to thank for this and the fact that a "glitch" showed Ky's face on the screen when it was supposed to be Xander's. I loved it when Cassia starts to question the Society's role in her life. When Cassia and Xander are matched they are assigned an official. The Official that is assigned to Cassia scares me. I kind of think she is pure evil even though she comes off as being nice and helpful.

The guys of the love triangle, Ky and Xander, are both great. Xander is the one Cassia is matched with. She is supposed to marry him when they turns 21. Ky is someone Cassia cannot have, but he may very well be her true match. I enjoyed watching Ky and Cassia fall in love, but I feel kind of bad for Xander. He obviously loves Cassia and would do anything for her. I'm excited to see what happens in this triangle in the next book!

I am definitely excited to read the next book in the series. I need to know what happens next! I absolutely loved this book because it was powerful and even intense at times. I enjoyed Ally Condie's writing from the beginning to the end. I cannot wait to see what she has in store for us next.

Review: Sucks To Be Me by Kimberly Pauley

    Synopsis:
Mina Hamilton's parents want her dead. (Or undead to be precise.) They're vampires, and like it or not, Mina must decide whether to become a vampire herself. But Mina's more interested in hanging out with best friend Serena and trying to catch the eye of the too-hot-for-high-school Nathan Able than in the vampire training classes she's being forced to take. How's a girl supposed to find the perfect prom date and pass third-year French when her mom and dad are breathing down her neck—literally?

    Review:
Sucks To Be Me is a book that surprised me. It was so cute! I honestly did not expect to like it as much as I did. It is probably the most entertaining book I have read in a while. Kimberly Pauley definitely knows how to bring across each character's humor. There were moments when I was laughing out loud because it was so funny.

The main character, Mina, is a fun character. She is only a teenager, so she does not know what she wants. Her parents want her to become a vampire like they are, but she is not sure that is the right thing for her. I definitely enjoyed her voice and getting inside her head. She is clueless about boys for most of the book, but what girl at her age isn't? I liked how she stood up for herself and others throughout the book. I also liked how she stopped liking a guy because he did not treat others right.

Kimberly Pauley is a talented writer. I loved reading Sucks To Be Me because it was just so much fun to read. There was never a dull moment when reading this book. I am excited to see where Pauley takes the story in the next book, Still Sucks To Be Me.

Here are some quotes from Sucks To Be Me that I just have to share:

"My mom was actually surprisingly cool about it, considering that Sunday is technically a school night. She asked me if he was cute (Dad cringed), and when I told her just how cute, she gave me a high five. Mom is awesome." (page 69)

"'Great! You'll like George. He's got a great personality and an awesome sense of humor.'

'Oh, so he must be the ugly one.'" (page 193)

"I just nod. Better not to get into that kind of discussion with my uncle. I can just picture myself trying to explain why Aubrey's tight butt and soulful eyes were attractive to me. No way." (page 208)

Review: Shadow Days: A Nightshade Novella by Andrea Cremer

    Review:
Shadow Days is a prequel to Nightshade. It takes place during the weeks leading up to where Nightshade begins, and it follows Shay Doran as he explores his new home, Rowan Estate. You can read it online for free here.

Shadow Days is definitely a fun book. I enjoyed exploring the Rowan Estate with Shay, and I especially enjoyed getting to know Shay better. It was exciting to learn more about Shay's background. In fact, Shadow Days has made me like him even more than I did while I read Nightshade. Shay is an amazing narrator, and I would love to read more of the story from his point of view. He felt real to me. Maybe that is because he has an actual facebook and website where you could interact with him.

If you have read Nightshade, you will definitely enjoy this novella. I would recommend reading Nightshade first or at least have it on hand because you will want to know what happens next after it ends. It is a short, quick read. Andrea Cremer is an amazing writer. I loved how she incorporated Facebook and Shay's blog into the story. I also liked how Andrea Cremer slipped in some references to other books like Harry Potter and The Hunger Games. It was exciting to recognize books that I have read and love.

    Book Blogger Hop (23)

The Book Blogger Hop is here! It is hosted by Crazy For Books, and it is a fun way to discover new blogs!

    This week's question is:

"What book influenced or changed your life? How did it influence/change you?"

    Answer:

This is definitely a tough question. I think all books influence me in some way, but the one that influenced and changed me the most would have to be Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. Twilight was the book that got me back into reading. Ever since I read it for the first time, I have been picking up book after book. I cannot stop reading now. It also screwed up my perception of men, but I have discovered since then that many books do that.

Review: The Silver Chair (Chronicles of Narnia #6) by C.S. Lewis

    Synopsis:
King Caspian has grown old and sad in the ten years since the disappearance of his only son. With time running out, Jill and Eustace embark on a perilous quest to find the Prince and bring back tranquility to the magical land of Narnia.

    THE SILVER CHAIR
    The Chronicles of Narnia

Journeying to the wild lands of the north, the friends and their companion Puddleglum battle mighty storms and encounter a race of giants who like nothing better than a tasty snack—of human children! Searching deep underground in the grim land of the Earthmen, they encounter the wicked Green Lady who has evil plans to overthrow King Caspian and become Queen of Narnia.

    Review:
In this adventure, Eustace returns with a school friend named Jill. A big part of this book is that the children must learn to trust Aslan no matter what. He gave them specific signs to look for, but they failed to follow them at first. I did enjoy this book, but I would have to say it is the most predictable one of the series. Some things were so clear to me right away, but the characters took forever to realize it.

One thing I really liked about this book was that Eustace is not as annoying as he was in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. His last adventure in Narnia really has changed him for the better. He is an all around better person.

Besides being predictable, The Silver Chair, is a fun and exciting read. I enjoyed following Eustace and Jill throughout Narnia. It was kind of sad to see Caspian as an old man, though, but it turns out great for him in the end. The adventure to find the lost Prince was fun and exciting. I love the fantasy aspect of these series, and I am definitely looking forward to reading these books again in the future.

    Waiting On Wednesday (42)...

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that I am eagerly anticipating.

This week's Waiting on Wednesday pick is:Wither by Lauren DeStefano

    Publication Date: March 22, 2011

    Synopsis:
What if you knew exactly when you would die?

Thanks to modern science, every human being has become a ticking genetic time bomb—males only live to age twenty-five, and females only live to age twenty. In this bleak landscape, young girls are kidnapped and forced into polygamous marriages to keep the population from dying out.

When sixteen-year-old Rhine Ellery is taken by the Gatherers to become a bride, she enters a world of wealth and privilege. Despite her husband Linden's genuine love for her, and a tenuous trust among her sister wives, Rhine has one purpose: to escape—to find her twin brother and go home.

But Rhine has more to contend with than losing her freedom. Linden's eccentric father is bent on finding an antidote to the genetic virus that is getting closer to taking his son, even if it means collecting corpses in order to test his experiments. With the help of Gabriel, a servant Rhine is growing dangerously attracted to, Rhine attempts to break free, in the limted time she has left.

Review: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (Chronicles of Narnia #5) by C.S. Lewis

    Synopsis:
Lucy and Edmund, with their dreadful cousin Eustace, get magically pulled into a painting of a ship at sea. That ship is the Dawn Treader, and on board is Caspian, King of Narnia. He and his companions, including Reepicheep, the valiant warrior mouse, are searching for seven lost lords of Narnia, and their voyage will take them to the edge of the world. Their adventures include being captured by slave traders, a much-too-close encounter with a dragon, and visits to many enchanted islands, including the place where dreams come true.

    Review:
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader was one of the most adventurous stories in the Chronicles of Narnia. Edmund and Lucy are once again the main characters along with their cousin, Eustace. This is Edmund and Lucy's last adventure in Narnia, so they will not return again like their other siblings Peter and Susan.

I definitely liked this book more than Prince Caspian. Caspian is now king, there is peace in all of Narnia, so he decides to go searching for the seven lost lords of Narnia. They were sent away during his evil uncle's reign, but they never returned. Caspian is determined to find out what happened to them. Along the way, they encounter many adventures from being captured by slave traders to finding a pool of water that turns anything that touches it to gold. Caspian even finds a wife! This book was so exciting. Every time the Dawn Treader cam across a new land, a new adventure awaited the characters, but it was not always for the best.

Eustace was my least favorite part about this book. He was just so annoying and a jerk! He thought he knew better than everyone else around him probably because he has been spoiled all of his life. I definitely liked when he was turned into a dragon because he could not talk for a little while. Eustace turning into a dragon was probably the best part because it changed him for the better. He learned to be a kinder person because of it.

Reepicheep is my favorite character because he is awesome. I love how brave he is even though he is only a Narnian mouse. Plus, he provided some humor at times.

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is a wonderful classic that I think everyone should read at one point. I have also seen the movie version of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and many things were changed for the movie. I enjoyed the movie, but it was definitely different.
